Science

At St Alban’s Catholic Primary School, we follow the Kapow Primary Science scheme to support and enhance our planning of a rich and engaging science curriculum. Our aim is to nurture children’s natural curiosity and help them develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Our science curriculum is built around three key strands:

  • Scientific Knowledge and Understanding: Children learn to observe, study, and explain the physical world through exciting topics such as plants, animals, materials, energy and space.
  • Working Scientifically: Pupils develop key skills and use a variety of enquiry methods to explore scientific ideas and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
  • Science in Action: We show how science impacts everyday life by helping children connect classroom learning to the real world, including exploring the work and discoveries of a range of scientists.

We follow a spiral curriculum that builds on key scientific concepts across year groups, allowing children to strengthen prior knowledge and deepen their understanding over time. As they progress through the school, pupils explore core units including:

  • Plants
  • Animals, including humans
  • Living things and their habitats
  • Materials
  • Energy
  • Forces, Earth and space

Each year ends with a Making Connections module, where children carry out a scientific enquiry based on earlier learning. This helps them revise, apply and extend their knowledge while developing interdisciplinary thinking.

Across all topics and year groups, children continually develop a set of core working scientifically skills:

  • Asking questions
  • Planning
  • Predicting
  • Observing and measuring
  • Grouping and classifying
  • Recording and presenting data
  • Drawing conclusions
  • Evaluating

We also place a strong emphasis on scientific vocabulary, helping children communicate their ideas clearly and confidently.

To bring science to life, we offer a range of enrichment activities including our annual Science Fair, whole school STEM days and trips to RHS Wisley and the Science Museum.
