Religious Education

Religious Education lies at the heart of our curriculum and school life at St Alban’s. We encourage all children to engage with the deepest questions of life and faith, fostering understanding, reflection, and respect for different beliefs.

Our Curriculum

All year groups follow the new Religious Education Directory, using resources and materials produced by the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. This curriculum follows a spiral structure rooted in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, explored through scripture and aligned with the liturgical year. Assessment against intended learning outcomes is ongoing and formally recorded each term.

Curriculum Structure

We use the scheme ‘To Know You More Clearly’, which has four key elements:

  • Knowledge Lenses: What pupils should know by the end of each age phase, grouped into hear, believe, live, and celebrate.
  • Ways of Knowing: Skills that develop as children progress, grouped into understand, discern, and respond.
  • Expected Outcomes: Clear statements of what pupils should know, remember, and be able to do.
  • Curriculum Branches: Six thematic branches taught across the year:
    • Autumn 1 – Creation and Covenant
    • Autumn 2 – Prophecy and Promise
    • Spring 1 – Galilee to Jerusalem
    • Spring 2 – Desert to Garden
    • Summer 1 – To the Ends of the Earth
    • Summer 2 – Dialogue and Encounter

Other Faiths and World Views

Through the branch Dialogue and Encounter, pupils learn about other faiths and perspectives, promoting respect and understanding.

Time Allocation

In line with the Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales, 10% of the teaching week is dedicated to Religious Education.
