Year 5

Year 5 is full of wonderful opportunities for the children to develop, strengthen and deepen their understanding across all subjects. Our curriculum is full of exciting topics to capture the children’s imagination and learn more about the world around them.

Maths

  • We follow a mastery approach using Power maths - a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity, excitement and nurture confidence in maths. It also develops oracy skills, which are so important during a child’s time at primary school.
  • In the Autumn term, we revisit key concepts, ensuring that the children have a secure understanding of place value and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages are a focus in Year 5.
  • Times tables and their related division facts remain a core focus as feeling comfortable and familiar with these facts can help children access many of the new topics introduced.
  • Other topics include: Perimeter & Area, Volume, Shape, Position & Direction, Statistics, Converting Units and Negative Numbers.

English

  • Daily reading lessons provide children with an opportunity to explore a variety of texts which include, Not my FaultWonder, Earth Shattering Events, BrockenspectreCinderella of the NileThe Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Treason.
  • Class texts are linked to our wider curriculum, enriching the children’s experience and providing them with contextual information for each text. Through our reading lessons, the children develop their inference, retrieval, summarising and prediction skills as well as their knowledge of vocabulary.
  • In writing, children learn to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences, carefully selecting language that demonstrates their awareness of the reader and the purpose of the text. The children learn how to enhance their writing by incorporating different sentence types which might include: relative clauses, parenthesis or fronted adverbials. There is a strong focus on looking at model examples of each type of text which give children an understanding of what they are aiming for. Children are encouraged throughout the writing process to edit and enhance their writing.
  • Writing is completed over a two-week cycle with the children being able to explore model versions before attempting their own.
  • At the end of each to week cycle the children write in a celebration book.

RE

We follow the updated Religious Education Directory – To Know You More Clearly, which guides children in deepening their understanding of the Catholic faith and its teachings. Lessons encourage children to reflect on the life and message of Jesus, while also fostering respect for other religions and worldviews.

Children are supported in developing their spiritual, moral, and cultural understanding through discussion, scripture, and creative activities. The curriculum promotes thoughtful questioning, personal reflection, and living out values such as compassion, justice, and integrity in everyday life.

  • Sometimes, there will also be a wider curriculum piece of Home Learning which links to children’s work in school.
  • Reading Records will be checked every Friday so please ensure children are reading at home and recording it.
