Year 6
Year 6 is the culmination of the primary school journey. It is far more than SATs - the Year 6 curriculum is designed to both challenge our children and to prepare them for the transition to secondary school.
Maths
- We follow a mastery approach using Power maths - a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity, excitement and nurture confidence in maths. It also develops oracy skills, which are so important during a child’s time at primary school.
- Lessons are designed to build both fluency and reasoning skills, helping children to apply their understanding in a variety of contexts. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to support progression and revisit key concepts, ensuring strong foundations are in place.
- Lessons are supplemented through arithmetic lessons and various problem-solving resources.
English
- Daily reading lessons provide children with an opportunity to explore a variety of text types in depth. Class texts are linked to our wider curriculum, enriching the children’s experience and providing them with contextual information for each text., e.g. Greek Myths (Class text) and Ancient Greece (History).
- In writing, children have the opportunity to develop and apply the skills they have built upon over the course of primary school. Children learn to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences, carefully selecting language that demonstrates their awareness of the reader and the purpose of the text.
- Writing is completed over a two-week cycle with the children being able to explore model versions before attempting their own.
- At the end of each to week cycle the children write in a celebration book.
RE
We follow the updated Religious Education Directory – To Know You More Clearly, which guides children in deepening their understanding of the Catholic faith and its teachings. Lessons encourage children to reflect on the life and message of Jesus, while also fostering respect for other religions and worldviews.
Children are supported in developing their spiritual, moral, and cultural understanding through discussion, scripture, and creative activities. The curriculum promotes thoughtful questioning, personal reflection, and living out values such as compassion, justice, and integrity in everyday life.
SATs
- Standard Assessment Tests (otherwise known as SATs) are sat by Year 6 children nationally in May.
- Assessing Maths, Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar and Reading
- Children are prepared for these assessments through practise in class
- Results are published in July
Exciting events in Year 6
- Wintershall Nativity - a wonderful opportunity to get closer to the birth of Jesus
- Bikeability
- Year 6 Production
- Swimming lessons
- Beyond Blocks Lego Robotics
- The highlight of the year for many is our residential. This year we will be going to Rockely Buddens centre in Dorset, which takes place in the summer term.
- During the trip, the children take part in a range of exciting water and land based activities such as sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, climbing and ziplining.
Home Learning Expectations
- Home learning is designed to consolidate learning from class.
- Every Friday, children are set one Maths and one SPaG activity from their home learning books via Google Classroom. This is then marked the following Friday.
- Children are also set revision quizzes using Spag.com and Maths.co.uk.
- 10 spellings to learn each week. Children will learn both spelling rules and common exception words as set out in the National Curriculum. They will practice these in their lessons and will be tested each Friday.
- Sometimes, there will also be a wider curriculum piece of Home Learning which links to children’s work in school.
- Reading Records will be checked weekly, so please ensure children are reading at home and recording it.
